The Science behind Metal Detectors for Food and Medicine

Many people are not aware that there are metal detectors especially designed to scan food and medicine products. However, most all foods and medicines are scanned using a metal detecting system. The science behind metal detectors for food and medicine is relatively simple. These devices are used in order to scan various types of foods and medicines to ensure that there is not any type of contamination of metal in the items. In the past, there has been metal contamination in different kinds of foods and medicines. In some products, the actual metal contamination was not found in the actual food or medicine product, but in the packaging that the food and medicine was packed in.

When there is metal contamination in food and medicine product, it poses a danger to the consumer. The food and pharmaceutical industry has strict guidelines when it comes to the safety of the consumer. This is one of the main reasons that it is mandatory in many situations to implement a metal detection process for various types of foods and medicines. When certain foods and medicines are processed, certain metals may come in contact with the products and contaminate them. In addition to this, in many situations, when a product is being packaged, it may become contaminated with certain metals.

The science behind metal detectors for food and medicine is very basic. The metal detection process uses a system of coils that are connected to a frame that contains a transmitter. When a product is passed through the metal detection system for food and medicine, it sends out a high frequency signal that emits a sound to allow the technicians know that the particular product and/or packaging contains traces of a metal substance. In years past, technicians would immediately pull the item from the line and do away with it. However, now, if a product is shown to have traces of metal in it modern technology will automatically reject with the product and dispose of it properly.

There are many different metal detectors that are used especially in food and drug scan systems. There are metal detectors that are run by a base conveyor belt. These types of metal detectors are efficient for scanning products such as small products that are not packaged yet. This may include frozen foods and snacks. There are metal detectors that are based on a highly advanced processor unit. These metal detectors are great for monitoring products like soups. There are also metal detectors that are especially designed to scan products that are pumped through pipes and other types of systems. An example of a product that would be scanned by this type of metal detector is sausage.

While the science behind food and medicine metal detectors has come a long way and is quite advanced, it is important to understand that even machines have the ability to malfunction. If you suspect that you have encountered traces of metal in your food and/or medicine, you should contact the Food and Drug Administration as soon as possible. It is important that you keep a sample of the product that you feel is contaminated on hand for further research.
